A detailed summary of our work in each country is available upon request; however, the following provides a snapshot of the current level of service in each of our five active countries.

UGANDA

Uganda is a country that has citizens who represent all types of society. Members of our Artfully AWARE team have worked in different parts of the country over a period of many years. Because of this knowledge of specific parts of the country and our excellent relationship with many communities, we have continued to use Uganda as our model country where we provide a large selection of AfA programs and projects.

Uganda’s people are very warm, welcoming and highly resilient. They have overcome great hardship through the colonial era, the Idi Amin dictatorship and most recently, the war in the north with the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). It is our wish to celebrate the people of Uganda as well as to work with them on uplifting themselves out of the challenges that they face. We are not there to be seen as just providers. We are there to treat them as equals and provide them with opportunities to use their talents and knowledge to make a difference to their own people.

WHERE WE WORK

GIVING A VOICE TO PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD

UNITED STATES

A majority of AfA’s USA Consultants live in New York. Currently, we are participating in New York based festivals and events for advocacy and fundraising purposes. We have collected a database of artists, performers and teachers with whom we plan to work with. We are beginning to identify local schools and community centres that are interested in exchanging artwork and lessons with international schools and cultural organisations.

The people of the US are deeply concerned about human rights around the globe, and many organisations are geared towards “rescuing” or providing outside services to distressed communities. Our mission, to make arts programmes sustainable, has been received warmly by Americans, and we anticipate that through our NY team’s efforts and further outreach, we will have a strong global impact on empowering people all around the world through the strength and inspiration of music, drama, dance, media and all of the arts.

UNITED KINGDOM

In addition to participating in various festivals and events throughout the UK for advocacy and fundraising purposes, we are developing strong relationships with schools. We are creating a very unique cultural exchange programme that links the schools with communities we work with in Uganda.

Artfully AWARE has a solid database of artists, performers and teachers countrywide, employed for project and programme purposes. We are currently in the midst of identifying additional schools, communities, groups and centres that will equally benefit from our initiatives.

BRAZIL

Currently, we are collecting a database of artists, performers and teachers that we plan to with. We are identifying local schools and community centres that we will work with in Belo Horizonte (known as BH). Our programmes and projects will be modelled on the basis of our work in Uganda.

Brazilians are warm, joyful and welcoming. Despite all of the country’s positive traits, great diversity, strong economy and growing role in international politics, it still faces many challenges. BH is no different and as most big cities in Brazil, social and educational differences are so great that unfortunately they lead to a big range of problems and gap in opportunities. Therefore, violence and poverty are still reality. BH has a very strong influence in the arts and entertainment industries. Given its overall excellent cultural history, it is a very good city for Artfully AWARE to gain a foothold.

SWAZILAND

Artfully AWARE will help advance the work of the SWATCYP and Art for Humanity in South Africa. We will work closely together to create a programme using visual arts, drama and media to teach school children and community members about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

SWATCYP strives to fulfill children and young people’s rights to participation, recreation, development, freedom of expression and information through theatre by advocating, training and networking at all levels. They aim to be a leading, effective and efficient children and young people’s theatre organisation in Swaziland. SWATCYP, together with Artfully AWARE, seek to use a methodology that will enable them to be recognised as a leading children and youth organisation in country.
