MEET OUR ARTISTS

Every painting, print and greeting card comes with a photo of the community member who painted it along with a personal, written explanation that gives meaning in their own words to their work. Adults and children from four communities participated in our series of income generating activities:

1. -Kwapa Post Test Club (PTC): A community comprised of mostly women and children who have tested either positively or negatively for the HIV virus. They come together to lend support and hold education activities.
   

2. -Nyalakot Post Test Club: A very large PTC that meets regularly and has an active participation amongst its members in their outstanding choir group.
   

3. -Mbula: A rural community that has held an exchange programme with the city of Cork in Ireland for several years. Their students, teachers and society members participate in related activities.
   

4. -Tororo Youth Centre: This centre facilitates thousands of children up to the age of 20 by providing a place for sports, performances and educational events. Youth leaders desire to go out and actively teach art related activities, such as drama, dance and painting, benefiting their neighboring communities. Artfully AWARE is working to help these youths reach their goal.
   

5. -Professional Artists Justin Igala and Gerald Kabuye: Justin Igala is AfA’s Uganda Representative who develops programme proposals, coordinates artists’ activities and teaches programmes. Justin and his work partner, Gerald Kabuye, created original paintings to sell exclusively through AfA.

Artfully AWARE teaches training programmes and workshops to enable communities to create meaningful artwork. We purchase what they produce at a fair market value and the communities make make a profit. To continue the cycle and develop sustainability, we show and promote the artwork to receive proceeds that are fed back into our programmes and workshops.

INCOME GENERATING ACTIVITIES

An income reduces poverty levels immeasurably, yet many communities have limited opportunities when it comes to participating in income generating activities. Artfully AWARE is actively creating a co-operative in Uganda made up of skilled artisans and is planning to expand to additional countries in the near future. We provide arts programmes, materials and training, and participants have the opportunity to create beautiful artwork such as paintings, jewelry and crafts which can be sold to generate an income, thus reducing poverty. Artfully AWARE also assists in teaching, marketing their artwork and adhering to fair trade practices.

Artfully AWARE’s own Artwork Line incorporates sellable products that include but are not exclusively limited to: paintings, photographs, prints, greeting cards, items of clothing that promote AfA and our mission and specially designed accessories. Proceeds are fed back into our educational and therapeutic programmes.

You can help support communities that are benefiting highly from our income generating activities by making a purchase or by providing us with an opportunity to market and sell our unique and special items at retail stores, gift shops, craft stalls, festivals or galleries.
